Moving Yourself: Tips and Tricks
Here are some lessons learned to consider if you decide to move yourself vs hiring a mover in Scranton PA:
#1 – Packing the truck when loading always takes long, and sometime much longer, than you planned. Getting furniture out of a house, apartment, or business can take a bit longer than you suspect due to the configuration of building and rooms. Conversely, unloading a truck generally takes less time than you think. This is strange, but true.
#2 – Good movers and moving company are exponentially better than bad ones. Some Scranton movers are poorly run businesses that have bad equipment, employees and work ethics. If you do decide to hire movers, please you homework and find a reputable, honest, and trustworthy moving company.
#3 – If you move in the summer, or any hot day, have plenty of cold beverages – no alcoholic ones, that is. Moving can be hot and hard work, especially in the heat of the summer. Keep plenty of water, Gatorade, and other thirst quenching liquids on hard for yourself and your movers.
#4 – Avoid moving on the weekends, or the beginning/end of the week, if possible. This helps avoid having to extend time with your own u-haul or having hired movers stay late – or come back the next day. Further scheduling weekends or beginning/end of week moves are always harder as they are more popular.
#5 – Using dollies can save you a ton of effort and work. Plan on renting or even buying your own dolly when you move – even if you hire movers a dolly is always handy to have around after a move. Furniture and appliances are notoriously difficult to handle without a dolly.
#6 – When packing a truck, remember the last in and first out inventory method. Pack your truck so the big items (furniture, appliances, etc.) are loaded last so you can unload them first. This may very well save you from having to rearrange the truck as you load other small items.
#7 – Have in mind where you are going to place items as you unload them – otherwise you risk a second move, so to speak. This is especially true with larger items so you should avoid having to move them twice.
#8 – Get plenty of rest the night before, even if you hire movers, as it will be a long, sometimes stressful, day. And go to bed early the evening of the move as you will be tired from a long day of moving. Remember, everything will still be there in the morning for you.
#9 – If you rental your own truck, remember where convenient gas stations are so you can easily re-fill the truck upon returning it. Further being mindful of these stations’ locations will help you avoid paying too much for fuel.
#10 – When you move, move completely. Try not to leave things in your old place thinking you can easily come back tomorrow to retrieve it. You will want to be completely moved the day of the move. Don’t fall into the temptation to leave an item or two behind – it will be double the effort the next day to get it.
