Winter moving tips

​Moving during the winter season can be challenging, especially during bad weather or snow covered ground.  As we all know, winters in NE PA cannot only be unpredictable but also severe at times.   The last thing you want to do is to move during a major snowstorm.  However, sometimes you just have to move, and move now.  So if you can’t avoid a winter move, here are a few suggestions:

​HIRE MOVERS

​Hiring professional movers is always a good idea, however it is even a better idea in the winter months.  Professional movers can more efficiently pack and move you than you can generally do yourself.  Driving a passenger car in the winter can be hazardous, yet alone a large rental truck.   Don’t consider moving yourself in the winter month – call a professional.  

Shovel and Salt

​If you are unfortunate enough to actually be moving when it is snowing, please shovel the driveway and walks – it will make you and your movers’ lives easier.  Also, salt any pathways prior to the move to eliminate any slick, icy spots.   You don’t want someone falling, hurting themselves, and damaging a valuable item.  

Don't forget the utilities

​Ensure you utilities in your new residence are set-up and operating.  The last thing you want to do is to move into a new home or apartment only to discover you don’t have any electricity, heat, and/or hot water.

protect the floors

Protect your interior floors (hardwood, tile, carpet, etc.) with plastic covering to ensure none of them gets damaged or dirty during the move.  Winters can be especially hard on floors, with the salt and snow on driveways and walks. 

maintain a positive attitude

​This should really be suggestion #1.  Winter moves can be especially challenging and there can be hiccups.  So, the more positive your attitude the more stress-free you will be.   When all else fails, a good hot chocolate or adult beverage can always take the edge off.
